WICHITA, KS - Two Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) teams will play in the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa on March 10-16. Sterling College claims the fourth seed in their regional following KCAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Kansas Wesleyan University is the fifth seed in their regional after being the runner-up during the KCAC Regular Season.
This year will be Sterling College's 15th appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady Warriors are coming off both a KCAC Regular Season Championship and a KCAC Tournament Championship. Sterling finished the KCAC Regular Season with a record of 17-1 and claimed the top seed in the KCAC Tournament. In the Quarter-Final Round, Sterling avenged their only conference loss in a victory of Bethany College of 82-45. In the Semi-Final Round, Sterling defeated Friends University to advance to the Championship Round against Southwestern College. Southwestern was able to take the Lady Warriors to overtime, but Sterling was too much for Southwestern to handle, winning the game 89-85 to claim the KCAC Tournament Championship. Sterling's current record is 26-4. The Lady Warriors are led by KCAC Player of the Year Cathryn Wiebe and All-KCAC First Team Selections Brtiany Gasper and Megan Patrick. In the First Round of the National Tournament, Sterling will face Huntington (Ind.) on Thursday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m.
Kansas Wesleyan University will be making their 3rd appearance in the NAIA National Tournament this year following a strong KCAC Regular Season. Kansas Wesleyan finished the KCAC Regular Season with a record of 15-3 to claim the second seed in the KCAC Tournament. In the tournament, Kansas Wesleyan defeated Ottawa University in the Quarter-Final Round, but was upset by Southwestern College in the Semi-Final Round. Kansas Wesleyan claimed the second KCAC automatic bid to the national tournament when Sterling College won the KCAC Tournament after winning the KCAC Regular Season. When the regular season champion is also the tournament champion, the second automatic bid goes to the KCAC Regular Season Runner-up. Kansas Wesleyan's current record is 22-7. The Lady Coyotes are led by All-KCAC First Team Selections LaCole Wilkinson and Stephanie Frost. In the First Round of the National Tournament, Kansas Wesleyan will face Morningside (Iowa) on Wednesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
