KCAC Menís Conference Basketball Preview: Week 8

Wichita, Kan. – KGSO 1410 AM Thursday Night Game of the Week returns to the KCAC this week, Tabor travels to Southwestern on February 7th.  McPherson hosts Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, February 9th, for the Scoreboard Show Game of the Week. Saint Mary leads the KCAC with a 13-1 conference record. Sterling College is two games back at 11-3.

The Bluejays won both of its games last week and are currently tied for third in the conference standings. Ryan Chippeaux led the team in its victory over Bethel, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, as well as 3 blocks. Chippeaux, Robbie Samuel, Nick Sauer, and JT Nemit all averaged 10 or more points per game last week. The Bluejays are second in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.397), and fifth in field goal percentage offense (.420).

Southwestern ended its five-game losing streak last week by defeating Bethany in overtime. Cameron Clark led the Moundbuilders, scoring 28 points with 13 rebounds. Clark had 13 points and 9 rebounds in the loss to McPherson, and is averaging 14.1 points per game. Tyler Shirley also had a double-double against Bethany with 15 points and 11 rebounds, his first of the season. Southwestern leads the conference in rebound margin and offensive rebounds per game.

Kansas Wesleyan


Last week: 1/31 L. at Friends 82-59; 2/2 def. Bethel 108-86

Kansas Wesleyan scored 59 points in its loss to Friends, its lowest point total since November 9. However, the Coyotes put up 108 points in its victory over Bethel, the team's highest point total of the season. Canon Fields scored 31 points to go with 11 rebounds to guide the Coyotes to victory. Dane Brinker added 20, which tied his season-high for points scored. Kansas Wesleyan maintains the conference's second-highest scoring offense at 77 points per game, but gives up an average of 76 points per game.

Samson Shivers averaged 17 points per game last week as the Bulldogs split its games. Adam Bruner scored 19 points in the team's victory over Southwestern, with Joey Powers adding 11. Devirous Johnson collected 10.5 rebounds per game last week, more than double his previous average of 4.7. The Bulldogs opponents averaged 62 points per game last week, dropping the team's average to 71, which is fifth best in the conference.

Bethel's losing streak grew to five games last week, including giving up 108 points to Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday. The Threshers are surrendering 86.6 points per game during its five-game losing streak. Ronnie Hodge served as a bright spot during the loss to Kansas Wesleyan. Hodge scored 29 points, a season-high, on 9 three-pointers. The 9 three-pointers tied a season-high in the conference.


Bethany (10-12, 6-8)


Last week: 1/31 def. Ottawa 87-73; 2/2 def. Southwestern 83-81 (OT)

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. Saint Mary 8:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Friends 7:00 p.m.


Bethany has won four of its last five games after splitting last week. Trey Beachum led the team in scoring with 22 points per game last week, including 26 points and 12 rebounds against Southwestern. Idris Ibn Idris contributed 18 points per game last week, while Dwight Abad had 14.5 points per game.


Friends (13-11, 10-4)


Last week: 1/31 def. Kansas Wesleyan 82-59; 2/2 def. Sterling 83-63

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. McPherson 8:00 p.m.; 2/9 vs. Bethany 7:00 p.m.


The Falcons have won three straight and are tied for third in the conference standings. Joe Mitchell scored 21 points in the victory over second-place Sterling on Saturday, and is averaging 17.6 in five games since joining the team. Friends remained in first place in scoring defense, lowering its average to 66.8 points per game. The Falcons have a 3-1 record against its remaining four opponents and could make a run at second place in the conference.


Ottawa (8-16, 5-9)


Last week: 1/31 L. at Bethany 87-73; 2/2 L. vs. Tabor 77-75 (OT)

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. Bethel 8:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Southwestern 7:00 p.m.


Ottawa lost both of its games last week and has a four-game losing streak going into a difficult final stretch that includes games against first-place Saint Mary and third-place Friends. Stephen Feighny had 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds against Tabor. Corey Smith also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the game, while Chase Dippel led the scoring with 23 points.


Saint Mary (19-6, 13-1)


Last week: 1/31 L. at Sterling 88-71; 2/2 def. McPherson 72-60

Upcoming: Next 2/7 at Bethany 8:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Tabor 7:00 p.m.


Saint Mary suffered its first loss in conference play last week against Sterling, which broke a 14-game winning streak on the season. However, the Spires maintain a two-game lead in the conference. JEB Greenberg helped the team bounce back after the loss, scoring 17 points with 6 rebounds in the victory over McPherson.


Sterling (17-8, 11-3)


Last week: 1/31 def. Saint Mary 88-71; 2/2 L. vs. Friends 83-63

Upcoming: Next 2/7 at Kansas Wesleyan 8:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Bethel 7:00 p.m.


Sterling gave previously unbeaten Saint Mary its first defeat last week, but followed it up with a loss to Friends to drop two-games back in the conference standings. However, the Warriors' remaining schedule is a combined 15-41, so there is room for a strong finish. Darius Alexander scored 21 points in the upset over Saint Mary, a season-high. Adam Brown recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds
