Preview: KCAC Women's Basketball Enters Week 8

Wichita, Kan. – KGSO 1410 AM Thursday Night Game of the Week returns to the KCAC this week as the Southwestern Moundbuilders host the Tabor Bluejays on February 7th.  McPherson Bulldogs host the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Saturday, February 9th, for the Scoreboard Show Game of the Week. Tabor leads the KCAC with a 13-1 conference record. Friends University College is a game back at 12-2.

Tabor has won its last five games, 8 of its last 9, and holds a one-game lead in the conference standings. Janelle Rust recorded a double-double against Bethel, scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds. Nikki Lewis led the team against Ottawa scoring 23 points, a season-high, with 5 steals. Lewis is averaging 2.3 steals per game, which is third best in the conference. Rust ranks first in points scored per game (15.4), and second in rebounds per game (7.6).

Southwestern has won three straight, and are in third place in the conference. The Moundbuilders are one-game back from second, and two-games back from first. Jana Reichenberger had a big week, averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Jessica Hobbs scored a season-high 21 points in the victory over Bethany sinking six three-pointers, tied for the season-high in the conference.

Kansas Wesleyan split its games last week and is now two games back from third-place. Christian Cassity had 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the team's victory over Bethel. Alecia Smith also recorded a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, a season-high, in the loss to Friends. The Coyotes increased their scoring average to 66.8 points per game, third-best in the conference.

McPherson split its games last week and is in fifth-place in the conference. The Bulldogs had five players score in double-figures in the loss to Southwestern, led by Kaylee Cramer's 14. Cheyenne Eisenhour led the team in scoring against Saint Mary with 11 points, and added 9 rebounds. Bailey Brown averaged 9 points per game last week and ranks first in the conference in free throw percentage (.774), while Madison Chambers ranks fifth in steals per game (1.8).

Bethel has lost five straight games and 9 of 10. The Threshers are averaging 52 points per game during the losing streak which is below the team's season-average of 56. Lauren Ulrich averaged 17.5 points in both games last week, and ranks sixth in the conference in scoring with 12.4 points per game.


Bethany (4-20, 3-11)


Last week: 1/31 def. Ottawa 53-43; 2/2 L. at Southwestern 74-48

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. Saint Mary 6:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Friends 5:00 p.m.


Bethany has gone 2-2 since it ended its 10-game losing streak on January 23. The Swedes split their games last week. Tanya Garner was the only player to score in double-figures in both games last week, scoring 13 in the victory over Ottawa, and 11 in the loss to Southwestern. Tasha Wagoner added 11 against Ottawa.


Friends (18-7, 12-2)


Last week: 1/31 def. Kansas Wesleyan 76-57; 2/2 def. Sterling 54-47

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. McPherson 6:00 p.m.; 2/9 vs. Bethany 5:00 p.m.


Friends won both of its games last week and are on a 10-game win streak. The streak has pushed the Falcons to second-place in the conference, one-game behind first-place Tabor. Whitney Bates scored 18 points in the victory over Kansas Wesleyan, a season-high. Friends continues to have the top scoring defense in the conference allowing just 55.6 points per game, more than three points lower than the second-ranked team.


Ottawa (7-17, 3-11)


Last week: 1/31 L. at Bethany 53-43; 2/2 L. vs. Tabor 57-55

Upcoming: Next 2/7 vs. Bethel 6:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Southwestern 5:00 p.m.


Ottawa came close to ending its losing streak last week, but were unable to defeat Tabor and the streak grew to six games. Amber Ramsey had 14 points in the narrow defeat, along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Lauren Buckles added 13 points, including a perfect 3-3 from three-point. Ottawa's final four games feature two teams the Braves have already defeated this season.


Saint Mary (8-18, 2-12)


Last week: 1/31 L. at Sterling 77-68; 2/2 L. vs. McPherson 73-54

Upcoming: Next 2/7 at Bethany 6:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Tabor 5:00 p.m.


Saint Mary lost both of its games last week and has now dropped four of its last five. Shelby Watson averaged 12.5 points per game in the two losses, raising her season average to 9.12 points which leads the team. The Spires have the third-ranked scoring offense in the conference with 62 points per game, but are ranked 10th in scoring defense at 69 points per game.


Sterling (11-13, 7-7)


Last week: 1/31 def. Saint Mary 77-68; 2/2 L. vs. Friends 54-47

Upcoming: Next 2/7 at Kansas Wesleyan 6:00 p.m.; 2/9 at Bethel 5:00 p.m.


Sterling split its games last week and was led by Kayla Eilert. The senior averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week. Randi Lucas scored 14 against Friends with 9 rebounds, narrowly missing her first double-double of the season. Allie Faul scored a season-high 13 points against Saint Mary. The Warriors have a 3-1 record against their four remaining conference opponents.
