Wichita, Kan. - In an effort to recognize the achievements of its student-athletes and member institutions the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference developed an award for the institution that performs the greatest over the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons. The KCAC Commissioner's Cup will be awarded annually as a symbol of excellence in athletics over 17 championship events. Member institutions earn points for the finish of each varsity team in officially recognized conference sports.
Points are assigned based on regular season finish for football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, men's golf, softball, and tennis. In cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field the conference championship meet results will determine point values. All official conference sports are scored equally. To be a conference sport there must be five member institutions competing in that sport at the varsity level.
Teams who finish in first place will be awarded 10 points, second place finisher receive nine points and so on until the final place team has been awarded a point value (i.e. if a sport only has seven teams, point values will be given from the maximum 10 to 4). Ties will be awarded the same amount of points and the next highest finisher will be adjusted downward (i.e. two teams tying for 2nd place would each receive 9 points, then the next highest finisher would be for 4th place and would receive 7 points).
For the winter athletic season, Friends University and Tabor College are tied with 35 points. The Falcons were crowned regular season women's basketball champions. They also finished second in women's indoor track and field, and third in men's basketball and indoor track & field. The Bluejays posted second place finishes in men's & women's basketball as well as men's indoor track & field.
Southwestern College trailed Friends and Tabor by only one point, during the winter season. The Moundbuilders own the 2013 KCAC men's and women's indoor track & field championships and tied for second place with Tabor College in women's basketball.
In scoring to date, Tabor College has accumulated 75 points. Although with no championship this fall, the Bluejays earn significant points with five second place finishes. Tabor earned a third place finish in women's indoor track & field and fourth place finishes in men's cross country, women's cross country, and volleyball (tie with Sterling College).
Friends trails Tabor by four points. The bulk of the Falcons points have come from two championships (women's cross country and women's basketball) and three second place finishes (Women's indoor track & field, volleyball, and men's cross country). Ottawa University, the fall points leader, falls to third. The Braves boast conference championships in football and volleyball, while finishing runner-up in men & women's soccer.
The winner of the first KCAC Commissioner's Cup will be announced directly following the spring athletic season, in which baseball, softball, men's golf, tennis, and outdoor track & field will be scored.
The first KCAC Commissioner's Cup will be awarded formally at the 2012 – 2013 KCAC Sport Management Conference on Tuesday, August 6 at Southwestern College.
