At the NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City , TN , March 6-8, junior Jessica Becker of Capitan , NM , won her first NAIA National Championship of her career and her third NAIA All-American Honor, while senior Caleb Svaty of Kanopolis , KS , and senior Nathan Whitcomb of Cottonwood Falls , KS , ended their indoor careers by earning NAIA All-American Honors.
On the final day of competition, Becker earned her All-American Honors again by winning her first National Championship in the women's shot put with a throw of 50-06.00, only 2 inches from equalling her personal best and current school record. The winning throw, which was more than a foot further than the runner-up, came on her second throw in the preliminary round. Placing 17th in the competition, senior Anna Miller of Blue Rapids, KS, finished with a throw of 38-11.50. For the men, the second day of competition began well for the Swedes as Svaty and Whitcomb earned their All-American Honors in the indoor weight by placing 5th and 6th, respectively. Heading into the finals, Whitcomb was in 6th, while Svaty, was in 8th. After his second throw in the final round, Svaty jumped to 3rd with his personal best throw of 58-00.50, but could not improve his mark with his final throw. At this point, Whitcomb had fallen to 8th overall before his final throw of 57-04.75 moved him into 4th. However, the next two competitors each threw over 59.00.00 with their final throws to move past the two Swedes. Following the men's indoor weight was the women's indoor weight competition. Leading the way for the Swedes was Becker, who competed in the event for the first time since the Kessinger Classic on February 2 and finished in 11th place with a throw of 49-11.25. Finishing in 15th with a personal best of 49-07.75 was sophomore Michelle Baltimore of Yuma , AZ , while Miller finished in 16th with 49-06.25. During the men's indoor weight competition, junior Sarah Helm of Seneca, KS, competed in the women's 60m hurdle preliminaries and finished 22nd with a time of 9.56. She was only .02 away from equalling her fastest time of the season. In the first day of competition, freshman Danielle Garman of Lincoln , KS , placed 11th overall in the pentathlon. Garman's 3063 points in the event equalled her personal best and school record that she established earlier this season. Garman began the day finishing 15th individually in the 60m hurdles in 10.11 (692 points) and followed that with a 12th place individual finish in high jump with 4-09.75 (588 points). Her combined score of 1280 kept her at 15th overall after two events. Placing 5th individually and throwing a personal best 34-02.00 (556 points) in the shot put moved Garman into 14th place overall with 1836 after three events. She moved up another spot to 13th overall with 2428 after placing 12th overall with a personal best 16-09.75 (592 points) in the long jump. In the final event, the 800m run, Garman placed 10th individually with 2:34.74 (635 points) and moved up two spots to 11th overall with her final score of 3063. Overall, the women finished tied for 19th with 10 points, while the men finished tied for 36th with 3 points. |
