Day 1 recaps

GAME 1: Friends 6, Saint Mary 0 – Friends pitcher Stephanie McCarthy held Saint Mary to three hits while striking out nine as the Falcons got the 6-0 win.

Friends, the top seed in the tournament, got three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Tiffany Starks led Saint Mary with two hits, while Casey Jenson had three hits for Friends and Annie Matthews added two for the Falcons

GAME 2: Ottawa 8, Southwestern 1 – Southwestern got a lone run in the first inning, but Ottawa answered back with six runs in the third and two more in the sixth to get the 8-1 win.

Korey and Kelly Higbie along with Jamie Miller combined for six of Ottawa 's nine hits.

Kayla Tibbs took the loss for Southwestern, while Jamie Simms got the win for Ottawa , allowing one run on seven hits.

GAME 3: Kansas Wesleyan 15, McPherson 9 – Kansas Wesleyan and McPherson battled out a home-run laden game with the Coyotes plating eight runs in their final two at bats to rally for the win over the Bulldogs.

McPherson's Katie Sorenson singled and scored in the first when Whitney Coleman took Jamie Peat's 1-2 offering out of the park to left field, putting McPherson ahead 2-0.

The Coyotes answered McPherson in their half of the first with a three-run homer from catcher Michelle Webster. Jamie Peat singled with one out to first, and Megan Duchene walked, setting up Webster's shot to right, putting the Coyotes up 3-2 after one.

The Coyotes added a little cushion in their half of the fourth when Katie Coker would lead off the inning with a single and later score when Heather Watson reached on an error.

The fifth inning saw ten runs scored, five for each team. McPherson plated five runs, four of which coming off a grand slam, in their at bat to take a 9-7 lead. Wesleyan answered back with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

GAME 4: Bethany 6, Sterling 3 – Bethany rallied from a 3-0 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to get a 6-3 win.

Lindsey Radcliffe was 3-for-3 at the plate for Bethany and drove in two runs. Jaime Barbosa and Samantha Gonzalez had two hits each to lead Sterling .

Kelly Spence took the loss for Sterling , giving up six runs on nine hits, while Savannah Dejmal went the distance for Bethany , giving up three runs on 11 hits.

GAME 5: Saint Mary 6, Southwestern 5 (8 innings) – Saint Mary scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead, but Southwestern added single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie things up and send the game into extra innings where Saint Mary was able to get the win in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Whitney Baker was 4-for-4 for Southwestern, while Nicole Wilson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Builders. Tiffany Starks and Heather Ashman had two hits each to lead Saint Mary, while Alicia Allen drove in two runs.

Meghan Walsh got the win for Saint Mary, pitching three innings in relief of Allen. Kayla Tibbs took the loss for Southwestern.

GAME 6: McPherson 7, Sterling 3 – Sterling plated two runs in the first but McPherson rallied for three in the third to get the win over the Warriors.

Samantha Gonzalez had three hits for Sterling , and Emily Masters added two, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits, led by Whitney Coleman who was 4-for-4, and Carrie Koch who added three more hits and drove in three runs.

Both pitchers threw complete games, with Amy Ziegler getting the win for McPherson and Gonzalez taking the loss for Sterling .

GAME 7: Friends 6, Ottawa 1 – Friends blew open a 2-0 lead with four runs in the fifth inning as the Falcons got their second win in the tournament.

Friends scored six times on eight hits and capitalized on four Ottawa errors in the game. Stephanie Jaime and Bobbie McCarty led Friends with two hits, while Allison Bellar drove in two runs.

Jamie Miller had two of Ottawa 's five hits in the game, while Ashley Mundy drove in the Braves' lone run.

Pam Johnston took the loss for Ottawa , while Brandi Leeker got the win.

GAME 8: Kansas Wesleyan 10, Bethany 6 – The Coyotes got three runs in the third and fifth innings and added four in the seventh, and fought off a strong Bethany offense that hit four home runs in the game for the win.

Chavez put Bethany ahead 1-0 in the first with a lead off homer, but KWU pitcher Katie Coker quickly regrouped, and struck out the side to end the inning.

Coker continued to dominate in the second, striking out two of the batters in the inning and forcing a lineout to center.

Wesleyan jumped on top in the third, plating three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Chanelle Thompson led off the inning with a walk, and moved to second on a stolen base. Barkley then doubled to left scoring Thompson to tie it at 1-all. Coker then singled home Barkley, and later scored on a Watson single.

The Swedes tied things up in the fourth when Kelli Noonan scored after leading off with a walk on a sac fly from Laura Christopher.

The Coyotes pulled out to a 6-3 lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to Bolings ineffectiveness in throwing strikes. Walks to Peat and Watson to lead off the inning gave the Coyotes two on with no outs. Back-to-back singles from Duchene and Webster each scored a run. A third straight hit, this time from Menke scored Duchene and chased Boling from the circle without recording an out in the inning. Holly Finkbeiner entered and forced a line out double play and a strike out to end the inning.

The Coyotes blew things wide open in the top of the seventh with four runs. Webster led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Menke. After a strike out, Thompson would reach on an error by Noonan at second that allowed Webster to score. A Barkley single plated Menke and Coker would reach on an error by Chavez that scored Thompson.

Darcy Bartz would make things a little interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run, and Christopher would reach on an error, but Coker would regroup and force two pop ups, including the game ending out on a ball to center.

Coker got the win going the distance, allowing six runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking eight. She threw 136 pitches in the game, adding to the total of 37 she threw in the first game of the day. Webster was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish while Barkley added three hits as the Coyotes had 13 hits in the game.

Boling took the loss for Bethany , pitching four-plus innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking four. Finkbeiner finished the game, giving up four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four.

GAME 9: Ottawa 8, McPherson 1 – Ottawa got all eight of its runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, as the Braves got the win over McPherson, eliminating the Bulldogs from the tournament.

Lori Ewalt was 4-for-5 at the plate for Ottawa , and Sharee Joyner added three hits for the Braves, who knocked out 12 hits in the game.

Courtney Bersuch was 2-for-3 in the game for McPherson.

Jamie Simms went the distance to get the win for Ottawa , while Mallory Yungeberg took the loss for McPherson, pitching four-plus innings.

GAME 10: Bethany 13, Saint Mary 2 – Bethany took out its frustration of the loss to Kansas Wesleyan on Saint Mary, easily handling the Spires 13-2.

Bethany jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, and added two more in the fourth go up 7-0.

Saint Mary got its two runs in the sixth, before Bethany plated six runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game wide open.

Bethany pounded out 18 hits, led by Angelisa Sexson and Lindsey Radcliffe with three, and the Swedes also capitalized on six Saint Mary errors.

Tiffany Starks and Heather Ashman led Saint Mary with two hits each.

Holly Finkbeiner and Katie Olson combined for the win, while Alicia Allen and Meghan Walsh combined for the loss.

Day two of the 2008 KCAC Softball Tournament gets started at 11 a.m. on Friday with Friends and Kansas Wesleyan taking on each other at field no.6 in the winner's bracket semifinal, while Bethany and Ottawa face each other on field no.4 in the loser's bracket semifinal.
