HUTCHINSON – Bellevue University jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but Bethany College got three in the fifth, and the game winner in the top of the ninth to squeak out a 4-3 win in the opening in the game of the NAIA Region IV Tournament at Hobart-Detter Field.

In the Bellevue third, Dave Powell singled home Jerry Zachery with two outs to put the Bruins up 1-0.

Bethany jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth. After a leadoff ground out, Andrew Ferguson walked and Eric Lehner singled to left with two outs. Harold Holbert then singled to load the bases and Hop Sullivan was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Danny Fernandez then singled home a pair of runs before Justin Long struck out to end the inning.

Bellevue rallied to tie things in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. Shawn Lee led off the inning with a single, followed by a hit by Brandon Sears. Powell reached on a fielder's choice scoring Lee. After a stolen base, Nick Damas singled to score Powell to tie things up at 3-all.

Neither team could muster any runs until Bethany broke through in the ninth. Sullivan led off the frame with a walk, and Long reached on a fielder's choice with one out. Long advanced to second on stolen base and pinch hitter Casey Getzelman singled to score Long to put the Swedes up 4-3.

Three quick ground outs ended the Bellevue ninth, giving Bethany the win.

Long took the win on the mound for Bethany (37-14) throwing a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking none. Sullivan had two hits to lead the Swedes.

Nick Love took the loss in relief for Bellevue , throwing three innings giving up one run on one hit while walking three and striking out four. Ulysses Roque pitched six innings in the start, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking three. Powell had two hits for the Bruins (45-13), while he and Damas each drove in a run.

Bethany will face the loser of tomorrow morning's Park vs. Friends matchup tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., while Bellevue will face the loser of tonight's York vs, Kansas Wesleyan matchup at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
