Mike Pettibone makes a play on a ball in the second inning of KWU's 11-0 loss to Campbellsville

ST. CHARLES, MO. - After two less than desirable days of baseball weather, Mother Nature provided a perfect day for the first championship of the Lindenwood Regional of the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championship. The result on the field, was not as good for the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, as Wesleyan dropped an 11-0 decision to Campbellsville University, to force a deciding game Friday afternoon at 1 p.m., at Lou Brock Stadium.

The loss snaps Wesleyan's 26-game winning streak, and drops their record to 40-16 overall.

Both starting pitchers cruised through the first three innings, as both teams managed just two hits through the first three frames.

It was the top of the fourth when the wheels fell off for the Coyotes, while Campbellsville came alive offensively.

Nathan Quesenberry led off the inning being hit by KWU starter Nick Allaire, and the Tigers followed with two straight hits to score the first run of the inning. Jimmy Voelker was then hit by Allaire and Alex Ponich then reached on an error at second base to allow another run to score. The error bug hit again when Zach Townsend bounced a ball to second and Travis Irwin flipped it to Alex Hall to start the double play, but Hall missed the ball to yield another run and keep the bases loaded. Colin Bryan then walked to force home a run. The first out finally came when Nick Bertolucci grounded out to second. Tyler Derby then singled to score a pair to end Allaire's day after three and a third innings. Wesleyan committed another error to move Derby to third and Queseneberry followed with a two-run blast to left off reliever Matt Royal. Another single by Curley, who moved to second when Brandon Mathes misplayed the ball in center came back to haunt the Coyotes as Brian Chase doubled to score Curley. Voelker then singled to score Chase before a pop out to first and a 4-1 groundout would finally end the inning, but not before Campbellsville posted 11 runs on seven hits and four errors in the frame.

Wesleyan could not get the offense going, unable to plate a run in the game, being shutout for the first time since February 15 against Rogers State in the fourth game of the season.

The Coyotes got a little something going in the last of the ninth, but could not capitalize. Hall singled up the middle to lead off the frame, and Kurri Darby singled to left, but Wesleyan's potential rally died there, as Burke flew out to left and two strike outs ended the game.

Bryan Fuller got the win for Campbellsville, scattering eight hits over nine innings and struck out nine. Curley went 3-for-5 to lead the Tigers, while three other players had two hits each, and all eight of the nine starters drove in at least one run.

Allaire took the loss for Wesleyan, giving up eight runs, but only four were earned in three and a third innings of work. He walked one and struck out one. Royal gave up three runs, all unearned, on seven hits in four innings of work, and struck out two. Richard Daggett pitched the final inning and two-thirds, giving up only one hit while walking one and striking out two. Hall and Darby combined for four of Wesleyan's eight hits.

The same two teams will meet at 1 p.m., on Friday, in the deciding game of the Opening Round Tournament. The winner will advance to Lewiston, Idaho for the 53rd Annual AVISTA-NAIA World Series, which begins May 22.
