ST. CHARLES, MO. - If something works, there's no reason to fix it, or do something different for that matter. After Campbellsville starter Bryan Fuller baffled Kansas Wesleyan's hitters for nine innings on Thursday night in the first championship game of the NAIA Opening Round Tournament, Beauford Sanders, the coach of the Tigers, went back to Fuller for Friday's deciding game, and the result was nearly the same as Campbellsville defeated the Coyotes 4-0 to advance to the NAIA World Series.
Fuller tossed his second straight complete game shutout against the Coyotes, scattering four hits and striking out six, but only needing 77 pitches to complete the task. Several times, Campbellsville had relievers ready in the pen, but Fuller continued to cruise and remained in the game.
Wesleyan had chances with base runners, but grounded into four double plays, which was key in several innings.
Campbellsville got its first two runs on the day in the bottom of the second off KWU starter Brian Dobyns. Alex Ponich walked to open the frame, but was retired on a fielder's choice by Zach Townsend. After a strikeout and a stolen base, Nick Bertolucci singled home Townsend. Bertolucci then stole second and scored on Tyler Derby's base hit.
Travis Irwin legged out a bunt single for KWU's first hit of the game in the top of the third with one out, but the first of the four double plays on the day would end the inning.
Dobyns worked out of a jam in the bottom half, working around two hits to hold the Tigers off the board.
Mike Pettibone led the Coyote fourth off with a single, but Alex Hall would ground into another double play before Ronny Romo popped out to end the inning
The Tigers added one in the fourth when Bertolucci reached on a bunt single and later scored on Nathan Quesenberry's single
Wesleyan again fell victim to a double play in the fifth. After a leadoff ground out, pinch hitter Matt Royal singled to left, but David Lovett would then bounce into an inning ending double play.
Brandon Mathes took the hill for the Coyotes to start the fifth and was able to hold the Tigers without a hit for the first time in the game. Campbellsville did add one final run in the bottom of the sixth. Mathes struck out Townsend to open the frame, but he then hit Colin Bryan, and Bryan later scored after stealing third when Burke's throw went sailing into left field. Quesenberry then walked and Chris Curley was hit to load the bases, but Mathes got Brian Chase to ground out to short to end the inning
Wesleyan got a one-out double by Hall in the seventh, but could not get Hall into score.
Pinch hitter Steve Cilladi nearly snapped Fuller's scoreless inning streak against the Coyotes in the top of the ninth, launching a line drive to left that just could not make it over the fence. Back-to-back errors by the Tigers gave the Coyotes a pair of baserunners, but the game would end when Hall would ground to shortstop Bertolucci who started the 6-3 double play
The win marks Campbellsville's first ever appearance in the NAIA World Series.
Three Campbellsville players had two hits each, as the Tigers got nine hits on the day.
Brian Dobyns took the loss for KWU, giving up three runs on seven hits in four innings while walking two and striking out two. Mathes pitched four innings, giving up one unearned run in the sixth inning, and allowing just two hits, while walking one and striking out three. Pettibone, Hall, Royal and Irwin all had hits for the Coyotes.
Wesleyan finishes the season 40-17, and just one win away from the NAIA World Series, which is uncharted territory for any team from the Kansas Conference
