JOLIET, IL - Former Kansas Wesleyan player Brandon Mathes is set to make his professional debut Tuesday, August 11, when he takes the hill for the Joliet Jackhammers against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Silver Cross Field.
Mathes is the two-time reigning KCAC Player of the Year, earning the honor both years as a Coyote. He was key in helping KWU win back-to-back KCAC Regular Season Championships in 2008 and 2009. Mathes batted .360 in two seasons with the Coyotes with 128 hits, coming mostly from the leadoff position.
On the hill, Mathes was unstoppable. He powered his way to an 8-1 record in 2009, with a 1.38 ERA in 19 appearances. He had six complete games, including three shutouts, in seven starts. He tossed a five inning one hitter on April 25 in the regular season finale against Tabor College.
"I am glad that Brandon finally has this opportunity," former Kansas Wesleyan coach Dave Dawson said of Mathes. "His performance of the last two seasons was exceptional. He is very deserving and he will be very successful for the Jackhammers the remainder of the season."
Joliet is a member of the Northern League, which also features the Kansas City T-Bones. The Jackhammers are 28-49, but have won their last two contests, including an 8-3 win over Winnipeg on Monday evening.
